"Silent Too Long, Silent No More" March to Conquer Domestic Violence
On Friday, October 26th domestic violence awareness advocates will walk in memory of the thousands of Chicago-area women who have lost their lives to domestic abuse. The march will begin at 11 a.m. at the National Museum of Mexican Art (Wolcott &19th St.) and will end at the Pilsen Little Village Community Mental Health Center (3113 W. Cermak) for a rally ending at 2 p.m.
Celebrating awareness about an issue affecting approximately one third of women in the US*, the rally will also raise awareness about many other forms of violence against women including: prostitution, incest, sexual harassment, human trafficking, racism, mutilation, pornography, and deportation.
Held annually since 1994 in October (Domestic Violence Awareness Month), the “Silent Too Long, Silent No More” rally seeks to address the problem of domestic violence by raising awareness and engaging the community in the struggle to end violence against women. Domestic violence has traditionally gone underreported and unnoticed in communities. Victims, fearing social stigma and escalating violence, often choose to remain silent about their abuse.
