What is Domestic Violence?
The degree of visible injury is not what defines an act as abusive. It is the existence of the behavior itself and the resulting atmosphere of power and control that defines this. Abuse and battering is any and all behaviors that harm, gain or maintain power and control over another person. These include:

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Psychological
  • Sexual abuse
  • Sexual exploitation

And threatening behaviors that curtail an individual’s personal power and/or create an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

What is the Illinois Domestic Violence Act?
The Illinois Domestic Violence Act (“IDVA”) is a law that relates specifically to family and house-hold members. Under IDVA, a circuit court judge can order and forbid a family or household member from continuous abusive behavior by granting an Order of Protection.

What is an Order of Protection in Illinois?
It is a court order made in writing that prohibits by law abusive behavior.

Where can I obtain an Order of Protection in Chicago?
You need to go to the Domestic Violence Court House, located on 555 W. Harrison (corner of Harrison and Clinton).

What are some signs of a battering personality?
Jealousy, controlling behavior, quick involvement, unrealistic expectations, isolation, blames others for problems, blames others for feelings, hypersensitivity, cruelty to children and/or animals, playful use of force in sex, verbal abuse, two very different personalities, past battering, threats of violence, breaking or striking objects, any force during an argument.
