40-Hour Domestic Violence Training
CAWC provides the 40-hour domestic violence training three times a year (fall, winter and spring). The sessions take place over 7 Saturdays from 9am-3:30pm. CAWC provides this training to individuals who have been accepted as direct service volunteers. This training is also offered to allied service providers interested in additional education for a fee.
This course provides participants with an overview of the complex social dynamics of domestic violence as well as skills for working with domestic violence victims and their children. 40-hours is the minimum standard of training set forth by the Illinois domestic Violence Act (IDVA) in order for services to be confidential under the act.
Sessions cover foundations of domestic violence work, historical and feminist perspectives, societal and institutional issues, dynamics and types of abuse, effects on children, teen dating violence, mental health and substance abuse issues, confidentiality, crisis intervention and safety planning, documentation and client files, gay /lesbian /bisexual/ transgender abuse, diversity issues including homophobia and anti-racism, and elder abuse. Participants who attend the full 40-hours of instruction in the required topics will receive a certificate of completion.
CAWC is an approved training site of the Illinois Certified Domestic Violence Professionals (ICDVP), Inc. The ICDVP has established required training topics and minimum time frames for each workshop.
