About CAWC’s

Open Door Project

It’s time to build better futures for Chicago’s domestic violence survivors.

At a glance

CAWC is committed to meeting the growing needs of Chicago’s domestic violence response systems.

Since 1977, CAWC has been a beacon of domestic violence support and expertise throughout the city of Chicago. As a leader in innovation and effective counsel, we are a trusted partner to the City and its people. We have responded to our city’s needs for emergency shelter, hotline support, crisis intervention, and legal advocacy. But, as we are now, CAWC is no longer able to provide the quantity and quality of services needed by our community. Our resources are limited, affecting our ability to grow alongside the increasing rates of domestic violence.

By building a new facility right here in Chicago, we will elevate CAWC’s innovative programming and expand our reach, effectively building out the West Side’s emergency response and social service networks. We’re not just building a new space – we’re opening the door to brighter futures for our clients and our community at large.

Quick Facts:

In 1977, CAWC established the first domestic violence hotline and opened the first shelter for abused women and their children, Greenhouse Shelter, in 1979.

CAWC currently provides more than one-third of the city’s domestic violence spaces.

Every sixty seconds, an average of 24 people are victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States – that’s more than 12 million people in a single year.

Better, brighter futures start here.
